Module Description Both the prevention and treatment of HIV in women present various challenges that differ from their male counterparts. Antiretroviral use impacts the female reproductive system, including the use of hormonal contraception, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in women. Women also experience unique and different adverse events affecting gynecological, cardiovascular, and neurological systems. Women and girls are 2-times more likely to acquire HIV from vaginal sex compared to men and have special considerations for HIV prevention and PrEP.

Learning Objectives
  • Describe the HIV burden in women and girls and the importance of HIV prevention in this population
  • Discuss behavioral interventions that can reduce the risk of HIV transmission in women and girls
  • Detail structural/systems-level interventions that aim to decrease HIV transmission in women and girls
  • Appreciate the decreased risk of HIV transmission from PWH who are virally suppressed to persons without HIV
  • Understand the efficacy of PrEP in appropriate candidates, available regimens, and monitoring recommendations
  • Detail barriers to the uptake of PrEP in women at risk for HIV and strategies to overcome them
  • Discuss HIV prevention methods under investigation, including long-acting PrEP, microbicides, and vaccines

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses and pharmacists who are engaged in the care of female patients with or at risk for HIV.
