HIV Transmission Prevention

Module Description  The Core Curriculum is developed out of the Academy's Fundamentals of HIV Medicine textbook and is an ideal way to learn the basics of HIV prevention, care and treatment or to gain a quick update on specific topics in HIV care. Effective strategies to prevent HIV transmission combine several types of interventions that are targeted at both people with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV. Interventions include behavioral, structural and biomedical methods.

Learning Objectives
  • Provide an overview of the behavioral interventions that may serve to diminish the risk of HIV transmission
  • Describe monitoring of the blood supply in the United States
  • Recognize HIV risk associated with injection drug use (IDU) and interventions to decrease this risk
  • Explain additional structural/systems-level interventions that aim to decrease HIV transmission
  • Describe decrease in risk of transmission from PWH who are virological suppressed on ART
  • Review the use of PrEP and PEP, including identifying appropriate candidates, regimens and monitoring
  • Discuss methods under investigation, including long-acting PrEP, microbicides and vaccines

Target AudienceThis activity is intended for physicians, PAs, NPs, RNs, and pharmacists who are engaged in the care of people with HIV.
