Advanced Clinical Workshop: Unintended Weight Change and Metabolic Complications in Persons with HIV
Program Agenda
6:30PM – 6:45PM: Welcome, Introductions, Buffet Dinner
6:45PM – 8:45PM: Keynote Speakers
8:45PM – 9:00PM: Q&A/Adjourn
Academy-credentialed providers, clinicians, members, and guest participants will gain a broader perspective on the intersection of unintended weight change and HIV, how to prescribe a more individualized, tailored ARV regimen, and a clear understanding of how weight change can affect metabolic syndromes. Metabolic syndromes such as insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia are a significant concern in patients with HIV, and increasingly, clinicians are caring for patients with unintended weight change and associated complications, such as accelerated atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. This series will serve as an in-depth discussion on FDA-approved HIV treatments, therapeutic alternatives, and weight change treatment options. Additionally, how to incorporate diet and nutrition into patient counseling is discussed to emphasize patient quality of life issues and treatment efficacy.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss the evolution of weight-related comorbidities, such as HIV-associated wasting and weight gain, over time, including its impact on morbidity and mortality
- Review the recent studies evaluating the management of HIV-associated wasting and weight gain
- Discuss the impact of specific ARV classes and individual agents on both weight loss and weight gain
- Incorporate both pharmacological and nonpharmacologic treatment strategies to manage both weight loss and weight gain
